Step-by-step instructions for creating and configuring a secure BitMEX API key for Auto Prophets.
API Key Setup Guide
Always ensure you have setup a Sub Account to use for your Trading on Auto Prophets. BitMEX API Keys should only be created on Sub Accounts and with Order permissions only. Ensure you use the exact IP addresses provided below for maximum security.
Backup Plan Not Available: BitMEX does not have a "Funding" account within the sub-account structure like ByBit does. Therefore, the Backup Plan feature is not available for BitMEX customers. All other Pegasus features are fully supported.
Create Sub Account
Begin by creating a dedicated sub account for Auto Prophets trading:
- Log into your BitMEX account at www.bitmex.com
- In the top right corner, click on your account menu (circular icon)
- From the dropdown menu, click on "Subaccounts"
Configure Sub Account Settings
Set up your new sub account with the appropriate settings:
- Click "Create Subaccount"
- Enter a descriptive name (e.g., "Pegasus Angel")
Using a dedicated sub account for Auto Prophets ensures better security isolation and easier account management. This sub account will be used exclusively for API trading.
Sub Account Settings
Now your newly created sub account will appear in the Sub Account Menu and you can see 2 options you can tick:
- Leave the Leverage Booster unticked (disabled).
- Tick (enable) Multi Asset Margin which allows your Pegasus Angel to operate and take full advantage of the exchange.
Access API Key Management
Navigate to the API Key management section:
- From the dropdown menu, click on "API Keys"
- This will take you to the API Key management section
- Here you can create and manage your API Keys
Configure and Create API Key
You will see the API Key creation form. Fill in the details exactly as specified and create your API Key:
Name: Auto Prophets (or any name you prefer)
Key Permissions: Order
Withdraw: Disabled ✗ (must remain unticked)
CIDR (Trusted IP Addresses): Use the provided IP list below

Before creating the API Key, verify once more that:
- Withdrawal permissions are disabled (unticked)
- Only "Order" permission is enabled
- All trusted IP addresses are correctly entered in the CIDR field
- Click the button to create your API Key
Save Your API Credentials
Once your API Key is successfully created, you will see a confirmation screen:
Copy both the API Key ID and Secret immediately, as the Secret will only be shown once! If you lose the Secret, you'll need to create a new API Key.

Add API Key to Auto Prophets
Now return to Auto Prophets and add your BitMEX API credentials:
- Navigate to your API Keys page
- Click "Add BitMEX API Key"
- Enter your API details in the form:
📝 Nickname: Enter a name for your API Key (e.g., "My BitMEX Account")
🔑 API Key: Paste the API Key ID you copied from BitMEX
🔒 API Secret: Paste the API Secret you copied from BitMEX
- Click "Add New API Key" to complete the setup
- The system will verify your API Key and confirm successful addition
Verify API Key Setup
Confirm your BitMEX API Key is working correctly:
- Check that your API Key appears in your Auto Prophets dashboard
- Ensure you can see your BitMEX account balances, this confirms the API Key permissions are working properly
Your BitMEX API Key is now ready for use with Auto Prophets! You can proceed to start your first Pegasus Angel.

Available Markets
BitMEX supports the following markets for Pegasus Angel:
- XBTUSD (Bitcoin)
Feature Limitations
Due to BitMEX's account structure, the Backup Plan feature is not available. BitMEX does not have a separate "Funding" account within sub-accounts like ByBit does, so automated balance transfers cannot be implemented.
All other Pegasus features are fully supported:

- ✓ Target Leverage configuration
- ✓ DCA Method Negative % settings
- ✓ Stop Loss configuration
- ✓ Trailing Take Profit
- ✓ Angel name and Hall of Angels display

Account Management
With BitMEX, manual balance management is required:
- Monitor your positions manually
- Add collateral by transferring funds to your sub-account
- Use appropriate position sizing to manage risk
- Set conservative leverage levels if manually managing risk
Security Best Practices

- ✓ Never enable withdrawal permissions

The Sub Account used for Auto Prophets should only contain funds you intend to use for automated trading. Do not use this account for manual trading or other activities.
Since BitMEX doesn't support the Backup Plan feature, it's especially important to monitor your Angels regularly and manage your risk exposure manually.
Common Issues and Solutions
API Key Not Working
- Verify all trusted IP addresses are correctly entered in CIDR field
- Ensure only "Order" permission is enabled
- Check that withdrawal is disabled (unticked)
- Confirm the API Key and Secret are correctly copied
- Verify you're using a Sub Account, not the main account
Cannot Access API Management
- Ensure your BitMEX account is fully verified
- Check that you have proper permissions for API creation
- Verify your account status is in good standing
IP Address Issues
- Copy the entire IP list exactly as provided
- Ensure no extra spaces or characters are included
- Verify the CIDR format is correct
- Contact support if IP addresses are not working
Lost API Secret
- If you lose the API Secret, you cannot recover it
- Delete the existing API Key from BitMEX
- Create a new API Key following these instructions
- Update your Auto Prophets account with the new credentials
Important Risk Considerations
Since BitMEX does not support the Backup Plan feature, you must be more conservative with your leverage and position sizing. Consider using lower leverage than you might with ByBit to compensate for the lack of automated risk management.
Without the Backup Plan safety net, it's crucial to actively monitor your Angels and be prepared to manually add collateral or adjust positions if needed.
Use the Pegasus Backtest tool to explore different leverage levels and their historical outcomes. BitMEX accounts may benefit from using more conservative leverage settings due to the lack of backup plan features.
